Today's events, my final in Singapore, spanned the spectrum of the national industrial game plan here.  I visited the Logistics Institute Asis Pacific, a joint collaboration between the National University of Singapore and Georgia Tech where the talk was about a pioneering study being conducted (for I.B.M.) on the 'co-evolution of national supply chains' which might sound like high academic abstraction but may well generate a whole new order of logarhthims to global supply chain equations.  RPwTZ^xk ]  
Then to a meeting with the cabinet minister who deals with labor at the National Trade Union Congress, where we discussed the country's approach to dealing with what for them will be an unprecedented problem, structural unemployment.  The approach---an ambitious program of training and workforce re-structuring (more locals, fewer immigrants) they're calling 'job re-creation'. Then to the Port of Singapore, arguably the busiest in the world and certainly among the most modern---where handling 10,000 containers a day (80% of them transfer) is not uncommon. ,QS).$t/ y  
And finally to an extraordinary land fill island converted into one of Asia's leading petrochemical hubs, Jurong Island, some $22 billion worth of equipment amongst dozens of global oil and chemical companies where crude is off-loaded, refined, cracked and turned into marketable commodities---the whole supply chain residing in one location with pipelines interconnecting all the different plants  to streamline the process. It’s instructive for an American, seeing how we’re confronted with the very real threat of erosion of much our manufacturing sector to China, to watch how Singapore is reacting to the same situation.  Unlike us, they have to face the problem head on.  Denial is not an option if they are to survive; nor is protectionism (Singapore’s economic lifeline is free trade, it struck Free Trade Agreements with its most important partners even before W.T.O.).

Many Americans still prefer to pretend our industrial sector is not severely challenged or that we can withdraw from world trade and hide behind tariffs.  Singapore, on the other hand, had to radically alter its traditional reliance on being Asia’s low cost producer (now conceded to China and India and Vietnam) and still figure out how to sustain at least 25% of its GNP from manufacturing (this was decided after an intense national policy debate about whether manufacturing should simply be abandoned in favor of services).
